Vibrant Partnerships
RELATIONSHIPS THAT STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY
In addition to our community gardeners growing wholesome, nourishing food, Ridgway Community Garden (RCG) places a priority on building partnerships with community organizations to support and nourish our local residents – including low-income families and children.
VOYAGER YOUTH PROGRAM
We love to see the excitement on the faces of the kids from the Voyager Youth Program (a local nonprofit) as they roll their sleeves up, dig in, taste and harvest edible vegetables, fruits, and flowers. They learn essential gardening techniques, environmental stewardship and healthy eating habits. Many of these kids then progress to cooking classes where they use produce from the garden to prepare nutritious meals and gain practical skills and confidence. Our community gardeners, in turn, come to learn the importance of Voyager in our Ouray County community.

OURAY COUNTY FOOD PANTRY
RCG donates considerable fresh produce to the Ouray County Food Pantry – nutritious, seasonal veggies that are often unavailable through traditional donations. This food improves the quality of meals offered to individual and families facing food insecurity. The partnership also strengthens community bonds, as resident gardeners see their efforts directly supporting their neighbor’s health and well-being.

OURAY COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH
Our community garden is thrilled to partner with the public health department’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutritional Services Program which serves low-income women, infants and children in our community. We offer a space for growing fresh, healthy produce that supplements and enhances the regular diets of the participating families. Through this mentorship program, experienced gardeners and health educators from WIC guide participants in learning essential skills such as planting, tending and harvesting vegetables. This hands-on approach fosters community connection with our gardeners, while empowering individuals to grow their own food and teach life-long skills to both parents and young children.

RIDGWAY PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Seed Library at the Ridgway Public Library (RPL) provides donated and locally adapted seeds to gardeners of the RCG for planting and experimentation. Gardeners grow and harvest these plants, saving high-quality seeds to return to the library for future use in the community. In addition, several RCG gardeners have collaborated with the RPL to share their expertise about local gardening practices through community classes. These exchanges strengthen local food security, preserve plant diversity, and build shared knowledge about sustainable growing practices within our town. Our gardeners have come to value the RPL as a resource in their efforts to grow nutritious food for their families.

RIDGWAY COMMUNITY APIARY
The RCG sponsors the Ridgway Community Apiary (RCA) through a managerial sublease on a shared piece of open space that is owned by the Town of Ridgway. The garden supports the apiary by planting flowers that provide vital forage for bees. We also host community events that celebrate pollinators and sustainable gardening. Together, we create a vibrant, educational space that connects people with nature and promotes environmental stewardship. None of this could be accomplished without the generosity of the Town of Ridgway, and we thank them!
